Hybrid breast augmentation: implant and autologous fat

In the hybrid method, an implant is combined with autologous fat. The implant provides the volume, while the autologous fat shapes transitions and contours. The procedure is planned individually and is not standard for every patient.

What is a hybrid breast augmentation?

With this technique, an implant is inserted first. In addition, fat is removed by liposuction from another part of the body, processed and injected into the breast in small portions, especially at the upper edge and the sides of the implant. This can make the transition between implant and breast tissue look softer, and the outline of the implant shows less in slim women. The principle is known from breast augmentation with autologous fat .

Who might this make sense for?

  • You are slim and have little breast tissue of your own to cover an implant.
  • You would like a soft transition at the upper pole of the breast.
  • There are slight asymmetries or dents that you would like evened out.
  • You have enough fat at a donor site.

With very little body fat, heavy smoking or marked excess skin, the procedure is usually less suitable. Whether it is right for you is decided by the doctor after the examination.

Limits and evidence

The combination has been offered more often for some years. Reliable long-term comparisons with classic implant surgery are limited. The fat does not take completely, so the share of autologous fat in the final result cannot be predicted exactly. A second session is sometimes advisable. Ask about the doctor's experience with the procedure.

Possible risks

The risks of both methods apply: bruising, swelling, infections, capsular contracture and possibly a later implant replacement with the implant; with autologous fat, also fat tissue death, oil cysts and calcifications, as well as dents at the donor site. Calcifications and cysts can show up during breast examinations. Inform your gynaecologist and the mammography centre about the implant and autologous fat.

Aftercare

The aftercare advice following breast augmentation with an implant applies, plus compression garments at the donor site for a few weeks. You gradually resume sport and physical strain as instructed. A stable weight supports the result.

Frequently asked questions

Is hybrid better than an implant alone?

Not necessarily. With little natural tissue, autologous fat can soften contours. With sufficient tissue, it is often not needed. This is decided during the examination.

Does this make the operation longer?

Yes. Taking and injecting the fat lengthens the operation, and there is an additional donor site.

How much fat remains?

Some of the injected fat is broken down in the first few months. The final result can therefore only be assessed after several months.
