What is it?
Both procedures use a Motiva silicone implant with a smooth surface (SmoothSilk). Instead of preparing the implant pocket with a scalpel under direct vision as usual, an inflatable balloon forms the space. The implant is then introduced through a sleeve (“no-touch”) without touching the skin. The incision is small. It remains an operation with a permanent implant in the body, even if it can be shorter and gentler than the classic technique.

The information comes from manufacturers and clinics that offer the procedure. It may differ depending on the provider and product variant.
Possible advantages
- small incision and short procedure time
- preservation of breast tissue and muscle
- procedure often under local anaesthetic or twilight sedation, without general anaesthesia
- shorter recovery time; according to providers, a return to everyday life is possible sooner than with the classic method
Limits and criticism
Experts take a nuanced view of the methods:
- Limited suitability: For sagging breasts, tuberous breast shape, marked asymmetry or a very thin soft-tissue envelope, they are usually not the best choice. In slim women, the outlines of the implant may become visible.
- Less control: The pocket is formed with a balloon without direct vision. Position, pocket shape and size are largely predetermined by the system.
- Limited volume: For a pronounced augmentation or additional need for a lift, the classic technique is better suited, see Breast augmentation and Breast lift.
- Not a “procedure without surgery”: It remains a permanent implant with the same fundamental risks.
Data
The methods are new. A prospective study of 100 women over three years reports a low complication rate. It is a case series without a comparison group and without independent multicentre evaluation (level 4 evidence). Long-term data over ten years or more are still lacking. Ask your doctor about their experience with the procedure.
Possible risks
The general surgical risks apply, such as bruising, swelling, infection and wound-healing problems, as well as implant-related risks: capsular contracture, displacement of the implant, rippling, rupture and, rarely, BIA-ALCL. The armpit scar may thicken. Existing asymmetries can only be corrected to a limited extent. More on the page breast implants.
Is this right for me?
Whether Mia Femtech, Preservé or classic breast augmentation is an option for you is decided after the examination. If you are interested in the new procedures, ask us: we will clarify with the partner clinics whether and where they are offered and what experience the doctor has with them.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mia Femtech a breast augmentation without surgery?
No. It is a surgical procedure with a permanent implant. It is short and gentle, but not without surgery.
How soon will I be fit again?
Providers report a return to everyday life the following day. How quickly this is possible for you depends on your progress. You usually wear a compression bra for several weeks.
Will there be a scar?
Yes, a small scar in the armpit (Mia) or in the inframammary fold (Preservé). It is considerably shorter than with the classic technique, but not scar-free.
What does Femtech mean?
Femtech stands for “Female Technology” and is a marketing term used by Motiva.
