Internal bra: mesh support for the breast

With mesh support, the breast is supported from the inside by a mesh, hence the term “internal bra”. The mesh is intended to hold tissue or an implant in position. It is not a standard procedure and is used only in selected cases.

What is an internal bra?

During surgery, a mesh of fine fibres is attached beneath or against the breast. It forms a support that lifts the breast tissue or implant and holds it in position. Over time, the body’s own tissue grows into the mesh. With absorbable meshes, the body forms its own supporting tissue during this period while the mesh is broken down.

Which meshes are there?

  • Absorbable meshes made of poly-4-hydroxybutyrate (trade name GalaFLEX). They are broken down in the body over about one to two years.
  • Titanium-coated polypropylene meshes (for example TiLOOP Bra), which remain in the body permanently.
  • Acellular dermal matrix, a biological material made from processed skin. It is also used in reconstructive surgery.
  • Silk-based matrix (for example SERI) as a further absorbable material.

You will find out which products are available at your clinic during the consultation. The choice also depends on approval status and on the surgeon’s experience.

When might a mesh be considered?

  • In a Breast lift with weak, very elastic tissue or after significant weight loss.
  • When replacing implants, if tissue has become thin or the implant has dropped.
  • In a breast lift combined with an implant.
  • In cases of marked tissue weakness, for example after several pregnancies.

Whether a mesh makes sense for you is decided by the doctor after the examination. With good-quality tissue, it is generally not necessary.

What is the evidence?

The aim is a more stable, longer-lasting result. However, the available data are limited. They consist mainly of smaller studies and case reports. Whether, and for how long, a mesh makes the result last longer has not been conclusively established. There is no guarantee of a permanently lifted result, as age, weight and pregnancies continue to change the breast.

Possible risks

In addition to the general surgical risks, there are mesh-specific ones: infections, fluid collections (seromas), foreign-body reactions, hardening, palpable or visible mesh edges and, with permanent meshes, possibly later removal. Additional scarring is also possible. Tell your gynaecologist that a mesh has been inserted.

Costs

The mesh incurs additional costs, which vary depending on the product and extent. You will receive a binding quote during the consultation. You will find general prices on the page Prices.

Frequently asked questions

Is an internal bra standard?

No. It is a supplementary procedure for selected cases. Most breast lifts and augmentations are carried out without a mesh.

Does the mesh stay in the body for ever?

That depends on the material. Absorbable meshes are broken down over one to two years; polypropylene meshes remain permanently.

Can the mesh be felt or seen?

Usually not. In rare cases, the edge of a mesh may be palpable. Talk about your expectations during the consultation.
