Capsular contracture and BIA-ALCL: what you should know

You should be openly informed about complications with breast implants. We explain the two most important ones.

Knowledge · 23 October 2026

Capsular contracture

The body forms a tissue capsule around every implant. If it hardens and thickens, this is called capsular contracture. The breast can feel hard, change shape or hurt. Sometimes an operation is necessary.

BIA-ALCL

BIA-ALCL is a very rare lymphoma that has been linked to macro-textured implants. Certain products were withdrawn from the market from 2018/2019. Many surgeons therefore use smooth or finely textured surfaces today. If there is swelling or fluid collecting around the implant, even years after the operation, this should be checked by a doctor.

What you can do

Ask about the surface of your implant during the consultation, keep your implant passport safe and attend check-ups. More on surfaces: breast implants.
